about

My husband Ben is an overeducated ex-music theorist who spent way too much time thinking about music. This is my armchair diagnosis for why he loves noise.

He regularly gets packages in the mail from labels that all seem to start with “Death” containing tapes wrapped in barbed wire, or insulation foam. I feel like one was totally in a block of concrete one time?

I think he just likes that it doesn’t take itself seriously. That it’s all this ridiculous packaging and hype for nothing. Because noise is about as close to nothing as you can get in audio form. I shouldn’t speak for him though, this is just my take as an outsider.

I guess the nothingness* is what I like about it.

One time Ben took me to some scary basement in a warehouse in Pittsburgh where this guy called Vomir had us put black plastic bags over our heads and then proceeded to make one long “harsh noise wall” at a plastic folding table using equipment that was probably just normal music stuff but in my memory looks like medieval torture devices. Yeah, I think there were totally chains involved.

Not gonna lie, I was kinda like “I don’t get it.” It was funny for like 2 minutes and then it was like “Ok, when can I take this bag off my head?” But I didn’t, and after a while I kind of stopped thinking and just settled into it. The nothingness.

That’s the thing, there isn’t really anything to get. Sometimes when I’m really stressed I put on Vomir and just sort of disappear into it. It’s like the loudness cancels out unwanted brain activity. Or at least covers it up.

(Nothing x something = nothing) || (Nothing + something = something)?

about

Pacing San Jose, California

Pacing is the songwriting and recording project of Katie McTigue. McTigue’s writing style has been described as “tongue firmly planted in cheek” (Surviving the Golden Age, 2022), an “off-kilter and wonderfully weird world” (CLOUT, 2022), and “I don’t get it” (multiple sources). Despite her safety net of colorful characters, jokes, and metaphors, the real her always manages to slip in somewhere. ... more
